Winter of 1777-1778. With the British Army secure in Philadelphia, the American army settled into winter quarters at Valley Forge. It was a winter of hardship and suffering for the troops. It was also a winter of training, in which the American troops were taught how to be professional soldiers.
Samuel Meredith was born in 1741; died 1817. Present at Battles of Princeton, Trenton, Brandywine and Germantown and at Valley Forge. Major and then Brig General, 3rd PA Battalion; served under John Cadwalader later, 1st Treasurer of the US under the US Constitution.

Robert Horton: December 26, 1751, Christened St. Sepulchre, London, London, England to Drayton and Ann Horton. Bet. 1769 – 1770, Robert Horton arrived in Am. as emigrant in Bondage aboard the Justitia. February 09, 1776, Enlisted with 3rd VA Regiment in Captain John Thornton’s Company. Bet. 1776 – 1778, Served in Battles of White Plains, York Island, Brandywine and Germantown. February 1778, Discharged at Valley Forge in PA. November 1778, Married Jaley Underwood. April 10, 1818, While resident of Culpeper County VA, he was allowed a pension at age 66. April 13, 1820, Died in Culpeper County VA. 1837, Jaley, wife of Robert Horton, was last “heard from” in an application for Robert’s pension filed from Falls Township, Muskingum County, Ohio. She possibly was living with one of their daughters, Mary (Mrs. Franklin) Anderson.

George Emery or Emrey was my gggggrandfather and according to family history was at the Battle of Brandywine, stationed, at his own request, as a private at Chad’s Ford on Brandywine. He joined the 2nd Virginia regiment of Continentals as Quartermaster in March or April of 1777. Was in the battle of Germantown. Wintered at Valley Forge and was in the Carolinas and Georgia. Still needs some research.

My ancestor, Peter Bowerman, served from Jan 1776-1780 in the 2nd PA Bttn/3rd PA Regiment, which fought at Brandywine and Germantown, and was at Valley Forge. His pension application simply says that after they came back from Canada in the spring of 1777, he “marched around to several places not remembered”, until he participated in Gen’l Anthony Wayne’s attack on Stoney Point in July, 1779. The muster and payrolls I have for him don’t include these places: they only verify his time in Canada in 1776 and his service in the Commander-in Chief’s Guards in 1780. He is also on the “Valley Forge Muster Roll” website, though they couldn’t tell me what records they used to list him there. I don’t know what your criteria are for including someone on your site, but if we can assume he was with his Regiment during the time he wasn’t in Wayne’s Light Infantry in 1779, then he was at Brandywine, Germantown, and Valley Forge, as well as at Stoney Point.
